I'm experiencing exactly the same problem, but with a sligtly different 
kernel version.
Everything was well working on 2.6.21-5, and , as for Lionel, strange 
rectangle when switching from X to console with kernel 2.6.22.1
I also have a mb v1, and i also suspect a kernel panic.
