I haven't gotten any replies on this. I've very carefully checked the 
old and new image, and they are identical including the MBR. Since, I 
can boot "from Hardisk" using the install system on a CDROM, I know 
Linux is happy with the new drive.

What I haven't said is the new drive is 1TB drive, though I'm only using 
the same 200GB as in the old drive. I'm thinking that refit just can't 
handle the larger drive.
