I believe there are now two problems affecting this bug present in Intrepid:
1. The applesmc might not generate events via /sys/devices/platform/applesmc.768/light, which would be related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/102270 2. The leds device name changed again, to /sys/class/leds:smc::kbd_backlight/brightness.
