I have sold my macbook, so it's no longer an issue for me. As far as I
can recall I managed to solve it somehow. Sorry I can't be more
helpful.

Early 2006 17" on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBook_Pro#MacBook_Pro_17.22

Problem:
Plugging something into the line out is totally ignored by ubuntu. Meaning 
Macbook Pro users can't use headsets
