As a result, the sound device is missing large functionality, including any use of the microphone, and headphone port. Using the model=mbp3 option on snd-hda-intel as described here: http://git.alsa-project.org/?p=alsa-kmirror.git;a=blob_plain;f=Documentation/ALSA-Configuration.txt;hb=HEAD restores the previous functionality. Workaround: append the line "options snd-hda-intel model=mbp3" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and reboot.
