Actually, the HomePod is a good product.  The problem isn’t that the HomePod 
was defective, it’s that Apple shouldn’t ship them out without first upgrading 
them to a software version supported by HomeKit.

In terms of performance, once it’s connected to Home, it does quite well, I 
think.  We used to have Sonos speakers, and they were constantly dropping out 
and needing to be reconnected or reset.  I don’t have any of that with the 
HomePods.  Also, I think Apple does a much better job of managing security than 
Amazon Alexa does.
