No, you're not missing something. You have to expand the full player to get the full set of controls, or use the controls on your headphones, if you want to jump back.
But to be honest it's been a very long time since I envied the Apple Podcasts app. I can't even remember why—it was probably cross-platform sync. Yes, that was it.
