thre must be a hard return in the middle of some words so that when I
paste the text, from Preview, the lines remain broken within words.

A.R. Try this:
• Find one occurrence of the problem and highlight whatever it is
that's breaking up the word;
• Copy the offending character to the clipboard;
• Do Command-F and paste it into the first edit field;
• Leave the Replace With field empty;
• Navigate right to Replace All (make sure the mouse is on this button);
• Click using the mouse or track pad button or anything else you use
apart from using the VO keys as the Option key will change the
function of the button to Replace All from Selection.
This should solve your problem.
