The Kindle is a device that looks just like a book. You literally
open a book cover, and the computer screen displays the text of the
book as if it were a paper page. I haven't looked at one in great
detail, but I'm pretty sure it was all touch screen operated. There
was actually a lot of debate in the beginning of this month, because
there was talk of making audio versions of its books available for the
Kindle, but authors started arguing that this would be a violation of
their rights contracts with their publishers. They said that reading
aloud and recording a book would be a performance, which is one caveat
of the contract for which one would have to pay. I don't know what
file type is used, but I think our access to the files is pretty
limited right now. There were articles on this in the New York Times
and the Wall Street Journal, for your reference. This is pretty off-
topic now, so if anyone has any other replies or questions for me on
this, feel free to write off-list - I'm not an expert, but my interest
was piqued as my field is publishing. Hope this was a little helpful.
