To read messages you receive, you have to navigate to the HTML content, and interact with it, then use VO navigation (VO right arrow) to navigate through the chat history. In Ichat, there is an option to speak incoming messages using the system voice, and I thought there was such a beast in Adium, but i haven't found it yet...
