Hi Dave and Ryan, I think we may have come across an accessibility issue. Basically, when you force the iPod into the restore condition the pane where the iPods Setting scroll area appears becomes inaccessible to VoiceOver. That's why Dave couldn't VO-Right arrow or tab there. I just managed to inadvertently get my iPod Nano 4G into this mode when I tried to find out whether I could reset the Nano 4G just pressing with my fingers (turns out that I can, but I did this while the Nano was connected to the USB port, and it had the unexpected result of forcing my iPod into recovery mode, even though it was trouble-free!). Due to the VoiceOver feature of copying last phrase to the clipboard (VO- Shift-C) I have a record of what happened. More importantly, I couldn't get to the "Restore" button except by turning Mouse Keys On and moving down from the Cover Flow View Switcher Radio Button until the Restore button was under my mouse when I checked with VO-F5. On my MacBook that took 340 down presses, I think.
So when I reset my Nano while it was connected I got a got a dialog window: iTunes needs to download the recovery software for your iPod. Please leave your iPod connected. Your iPod will restart automatically after the recovery software has been downloaded. Then: iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. A newer version of the iPod software has been downloaded (version 1.0.3). Would you like to restore with the newest version? You may also choose to restore with the same version as your iPod has now (version 1.0.2). (This last was very strange, since I had version 1.0.3 on my iPod -- that was the version that finally allowed us to turn off Cover Flow.) Button options were Cancel, Use Same Version, or Use Newest Version. I chose to Use Newest Version. At this point I got the dialog: Are you sure you want to restore the iPod “iPod” to its factory settings? All of your media and other data will be erased. So, I said OK here, since all of my files and playlists are backed up. At this point I get a new dialog window where I have to authorize this with my password: iTunes requires that you type your password. Authentication Secure Edit Text I type in my password, and I get the message: Your iPod has been restored to factory settings, and is restarting. Please leave your iPod connected. It will appear in the iTunes window after it restarts. This message will be dismissed in 10 seconds. At this point I hit Dave's problem: There's no settings window to navigate to with VoiceOver. Tabbing, VO-Right arrow, VO-Down arrow, doesn't get me anywhere. It turns out that there is a window with a Restore button, but there's no way to navigate there. But, it turns out that someone with sighted access to the page can tell you that the restore button is almost directly below the Cover Flow View Switcher Radio Button. So I go to that button with VoiceOver, move my mouse cursor to that button (VO-Command-F5), read it's position with VO-F5, turn on MouseKeys in the Universal Access Window so I can move the mouse with key presses (without using VoiceOver), turn off cursor tracking with VO-Shift-F3 and arrow down by tapping the "K" key on my MacBook. It takes about 340 down presses while I periodically check with VO-F5 until I hear that the Restore button is under my mouse. I press it (with the trackpad of my MacBook), turn cursor tracking back on (VO-Shift-F3) and turn MouseKeys off. VO-F5 pressed once tells me what is under the mouse, pressed twice tells me the x and y screen pixel location of my cursor, and pressed three times (which I don't use), tells me the x and y pixel location of my cursor relative to the window origin. So when I reach the "Restore" button I'll hear that it is under the Mouse with VO-F5. I get the "Set Up Your iPod" window, and proceed as though this were a new setup. The iPod is not identified (even though it's still connected) in the sources table until I manage to press the "Restore" button. I think it's rare that you'll need to get to restore where the device isn't recognized in iTunes, but we've just seen this can happen. In Dave's case, maybe the reset will work. If the device is seen in iTunes (or if he can open if by using VO-backslash in the sources table and navigate the contents), it should be OK. HTH. I now also find that the sync status window (VO-Up Arrow twice from the iPod Settings window after you stop interacting) has a "stop" button so I don't need to let this try to sync everything in my library. I can just stop it and point it to my own transfer playlist.
