Hi Ryan, Dan, and Others,
You can cancel your Mobile Me subscription from either Safari or one
of the WebKit nightly builds. The instructions vary according to your
web navigation setting, but here's how to do it if you have "DOM mode"
set under VoiceOver utility. After you log into the Mobile Me web
page, you only need to press the "Account" link (either VO-Right arrow
5 times to the link and press it with VO-Space, or use link chooser
menu to get to the "Account" link). After you type in your password
again in response to the prompt and the page updates, VO-Right arrow
past the "Account" link to the account summary information. After
your name, and login name, there will be a summary line for your
renewal status, then a summary of your current Mail and iDisk storage
usage and an entry for account details. VO-Right arrow past this and
press (VO-Space) on "Options" to get to the page for canceling your
subscription. This page contains a summary of the renewal price, a
line for upgrade options, and a summary line that states whether your
account will renew or expire at the termination date, followed by Save
and Cancel buttons. The issue on this page is that the checkbox for
renewal in the current account pages doesn't appear to have an anchor
point for VoiceOver, so you need to turn on Mouse Keys in the
Universal Access menu settings to move your cursor down from "Renew"
to the checkbox using your keyboard movement keys in place of
VoiceOver controls.
On my Mac Book, I started with my mouse cursor routed to the "Renew"
on the Options page (VO-Command-F5), turned on Mouse Keys (by pressing
"Option" 5 times -- my configuration choice under Universal Access),
turned off cursor tracking (VO-Shift-F3), pressed the "k" (down arrow
Mouse Key) 24 times, and then clicked with my trackpad to uncheck the
checkbox. Then I turned cursor tracking back on (VO-Shift-F3), turned
off Mouse Keys, and checked that the message: "Your account will renew
on <date>" had disappeared. I pressed the "Save" button with VO-
Space, and was taken back to the Account Summary page, where the
message now read: "Your subscription will end on <date>."
Since I don't want to cancel my Mobile Me subscription, I reversed
this action. If you're on a different resolution screen, what you
want to do is move your mouse cursor to the same y pixel position as
the renewal price ($99.00). Read the pixel location with VO-Command-
F5 (twice). "Renew" and "Price" are on the same line (same y pixel
value), and the check box and price also share a line (same y pixel
value, displaced by 24 pixels), but each of these elements are in
columns centered under "Renew" and "Price". So if you start with your
mouse cursor routed to "Renew" (VO-Command-F5) and move down to the
same line as $99.00, your cursor will be on the checkbox.
There's an option that I use under the Keyboard & Mouse tab of
Universal Access to turn Mouse Keys on and off by pressing the option
key 5 times quickly.
I've separated out the description of Mouse Keys below, so people who
know about this don't have to read through it to cancel their Mobile
Me subscriptions.
As a general comment, how you navigate in the Mobile Me web pages
depends on whether you have "DOM mode" or "group mode" selected for
your Web options under the VoiceOver Utility menu. It's also easier to
navigate if you have your cursors tracking. Then you can simply bring
up item chooser menu for "Billing Info" and click on the selection
with your trackpad to change your credit card information. I find that
checking "Mouse cursor follows VoiceOver cursor" (and "VoiceOver
cursor follows Mouse cursor") under Navigation options generally works
better in apps with transitioning VoiceOver accessibility, and this
includes Mobile Me's web interface. In the latest WebKit nightly
build, for example, this setting lets me navigate through the
different menu options, while otherwise I have problems getting my
mouse cursor routed to my VoiceOver cursor with VO-Command-F5.
The rest of this post contains details about using Mouse Keys and what
appears in the Mobile Me screens. Skip if not needed.
Background on Mouse Keys:
Mouse Keys is a mode for moving your mouse cursor using keyboard
presses. It's enabled under the Universal Access menu under the
"Mouse & Trackpad" tab, (instead of the "Seeing" tab used for
VoiceOver), and allows users with disabilities that prevent their
easily using a mouse to precisely control mouse positioning with the
arrow keys on a numeric keypad. Sighted Mouse Key users visually
inspect the mouse position on the screen. VoiceOver users can use VO-
F5 (twice) to report the position of the mouse in x and y screen pixel
coordinates. The first VO-F5 press identifies what is under the mouse,
e.g. "Renew is under the mouse". On older Mac laptops with a Numlock
key (F6) to activate a full numeric keypad, the three by three block
of numbers from 1 to 9 are under the right side of the keyboard, with
"7 8 9" matched to the "7 8 9" number keys at the top of the
keyboard. Then "4 5 6" matches "u i o" and "1 2 3" matches "j k l".
The "5" key at the center of the block is used as the reference point
for the current position and the surrounding keys are used as arrow
keys to move up, down, left, right, and diagonally according to their
position with respect to the "5" key. On a laptop, pressing the "8"
key moves up one screen pixel in y, and pressing the "k" key ("2" on a
numeric keypad) moves down one pixel in y. "u" (or "4") moves one
pixel left in x, "o" (or "6") moves one pixel right in x, etc. When
you enable Mouse Keys on a laptop, those keys are the ones that you
use to move your mouse cursor. On a full-size keyboard for desk top
use, you just use the numeric keypad. Because Numpad Commander and
Mouse Keys both use the numeric keypad, but with possibly different
definitions, you should turn off Numpad Commander if you use Mouse
Keys. There's a specific warning about this in the VoiceOver Getting
Started Guide for Leopard. You may find it convenient to lock your
VoiceOver keys (VO-semi-colon) when you use Mouse Keys and unlock them
when you're done.
I set up Mouse Keys with the option to toggle it on or off by pressing
the option key 5 times quickly in succession:
• Open System Preferences: VO-M to go to Apple menu of menu bar,
Arrow Down, press "s y" to navigate to System Preferences, and return
• Open Universal Access menu: from System Preferences toolbar press
tab to move out of toolbar, then press "u" to go to "Universal
Access". VO-Space to select.
• Navigate to Keyboard & Mouse tab: in Universal Access menu press tab
to move out of toolbar to first tab ("Seeing"), then VO-Right Arrow to
(4th) "Keyboard & Trackpad" tab. VO-Space to select it.
* Check box to turn Mouse Keys on/off with option key: under the
"Keyboard & Trackpad" tab, VO-Right Arrow to the checkbox to "Press
the Option key five times to turn Mouse Keys on or off" and use VO-
Space to check this.
• Optionally, check the box for "Show Universal Access status in the
menu bar". Not necessary, but allows you to check whether mouse keys
is turned on or off by using VO-M twice (or Control-F8) to navigate
this status icon on the status menu bar.
• Close the System Preferences window with Command-W
To log into Mobile Me and check your account renewal status:
• In Safari, go to the Mobile Me web page at http://www.me.com (e.g.,
Command-L to go to address bar, type, "me.com" without quotes and
press return)
• On the Mobile Me page, enter your login name and password (e.g. at
"Edit text blank" type in name and press return, at "Secure edit text"
type in your password and press return)
• You'll be logged in at your mail page. When you hear "HTML",
interact (VO-Shift-Down Arrow). You'll be at the "Mail" link. VO-
Right arrow past the links for "Contacts", "Calendar", "Gallery", and
"iDisk" to "Account".
• Activate the "Accounts" link (VO-Space). You'll be asked to enter
your password again for security verification purposes. I just tab to
"Secure edit text", type in my password, and press return.
• Review the information on the Account Summary Page. VO-Right arrow
past the 6 links again to the Account Summary (or you can use links
chooser menu to select "Account" and VO-Right Arrow from there).
You'll hear in sequence: your name, Mobile Me user name, and then
your current account renewal status, e.g.
"Your subscription will renew on May 18, 2009". The next items give
your Mail and iDisk Storage (e.g. "7.6 GB of 20 GB used") and pressing
(VO-Space) "Upgrade" or "Settings" (the next two items) each select
pages where you can change the total storage ("Upgrade") or storage
allocation ("Settings"). (These are completely accessible; you're told
the totals of currently used and allocated space under Mail and iDisk,
and you can change your allocations by setting a pop up button for
Mail allocation. The remainder is allocated for your iDisk. You
press the save or cancel button and are returned to the Account
Summary page.) The final items are your Account details: type of
account (e.g. personal or family), renewal date, and data transfer
usage. (There's a link you can activate to view your monthly transfer
activity).
HTH
Cheers,
Esther
