Kevin,

Did you see my post from a couple of months ago about using smart
playlists? That's probably a useful starting point. Smart playlists
live update their conditions. Here's an example of what happens if
you sync to a smart playlist for an audiobook made of multiple mp3
sections that demonstrates the way that syncing and also smart
playlists work.

If you have an MP3 audiobook that you want to play from a smart
playlist, and you have selected all the tracks in this book (Command-
A), used Get Info (Command-I) to edit it, navigated to the Options
Tab, and set the pop up for Media Kind to "Audiobook", and the pop
ups for Remember Position and Skip when shuffling to "Yes" so the
tracks will show up under Audiobooks and "bookmark" their last
location, you can set up a smart playlist. The rules would be:
1. <Album> <is> <"Name of Album">
2. <Play count> <is> "0"

As you listen to the audiobook on your iPod by playing from the smart
playlist, bookmarking remembers your current position in the current
track, which is always at the top of the smart playlist. As you
finish listening to tracks, they drop off the smart playlist (but are
still on your iPod if you search by Artist, Genre, Album, etc.). When
you sync your smart playlist again, the tracks you have listened to
will be removed from the iPod (just as they are no longer on the smart
playlist).

Hope that helps.
