Nik.  Forgive the question but could it be that they are added and in the 
music portion of your library?  Sometimes this happens.  If this is the 
case, do the following to sort out your issue.

1.  go to the music part of your library.
2.  Search for the audio book.
3.  Once found select all the tracks within the book.
4.  Press control and I.  This will bring up a box where you can change 
information.  At this point you will be asked if you're sure you want to 
change information for multiple items.  The answer is yes or ok whichever 
your options are.
5.  Once here, press right arrow until you get to the options tab.
6.  Once on the options tab, tab across until you hear "kind".  This is a 
combo box.
6.  Use your down arrow and change from music to audio books.  This should 
fix the problem if this is indeed what your problem is.
