Hi Krister, The unix set up generally does a reasonable job of keeping disks de- fragmented. There are circumstances in which a defragmentation product is needed -- usually this is where you do editing of large video files and trying to extend their size. You may also see performance issues if you're running your disk really full, have lots of windows open, have widgets open that are using memory, doing a lot of streaming video (e.g. YouTube) so that you're filling up your browser cache without cleaning it, have lots of files on your desktop, etc. So Dan's question is reasonable; using a defragmentation program on a Mac can be required, but it usually is for specific situations. If someone were ripping lots of DVDs and editing them, this is the kind of activity that could result in fragmentation requiring a special defragmentation program. However, if there are other issues behind your performance degradation -- if you keep widgets open, have lots of Finder windows open, have several files on your Desktop (instead of putting them into a folder), do a lot of streaming playing and never clear out your browser cache, run your disk nearly full, etc. then your performance issues won't be solved by a defragmentation program. I remember that Dan mentioned (back in the days of his using Tiger), that simply setting up Safari to download PDF files instead of display them in the browser solved a lot of his "busy" messages. (This was by using one of the setting of the maintenance tool, OnyX).
