Yup, having checked, mine are prefixed with a period here.  I seem to
recall an explanation of this way back, though couldn't easily find it
in the archives.  The general jist was that these smaller files are
something that mac os uses to keep track of something or other (soooo
technical haha), and while mac os itself knows we won't want to see
them by default, other os's don't realise.

If we're lucky, one of the unix/linux guru's will chime in and explain
more.  There is also I believe a terminal command to change this
behaviour if it drives you nuts, although I'd wait for a more in depth
explanation before executing it.
