Hi All, I looked at itunes help, and discovered that I had made a huge mistake. In actuality, both Autofill and copy and paste are working fine, both in Windows and on the Mac.
The mistake I made was thinking that unchecking Sync music on the Music tab of the iPod was the same thing as checking Manually Manage Music on the Summary tab. It turns out these are not equivalent at all. Checking Manually Manage Music is necessary to turn on copy and paste and autofill. I am now wiping the egg off my face. sorry for causing all this bother.
