>From what I've read, SL will default into 32-bit for all machines except 
X-Server machines. Although there are some machines where you can force SL 
to boot into a 64-bit kernel but I'm not sure if this will be a complete 
64-bit boot. Which MacBook Pro do you have as I do not think that the 13in 
is included in the list of machines that can boot into 64-bit.
