Anna, You are right that option + shift + down or up arrow will select a paragraph. I have just checked and to much delight it does that.
However, on my machine, option+shift + right or left arrow will select a word at a time. Control+option+arrow keys do not select but are vo navigation modes. On my machine again, command+shift+right arrow will select a line of text.
