As far as jumping over menus, there is a new setting in the voice over utility to automatically interact with items when tabbing to them, you might try unchecking that. Gmail and google reader are useable, but the design of these pages is very nonstandard. You need to press v o command f5 to move the mouse to the item, then do a mouse click to activate the item.
