There's a very good recent article at TidBITS about "How to Reformat a  
New External Hard Disk":

The issue, as Jonathan mentions is that while you can copy files from  
other drives, even drives that were formatted for Windows, you can't  
migrate from drives that use a different format structure.  What's  
even more confusing is that there are two Apple partitioning schemes  
depending on whether you use an Intel Mac (GUID partition table) or  
older PowerPC Mac (Apple partition table), and while you can boot an  
Intel Mac from a disk that was created with an Apple partition table,  
you can't perform system updates, etc. to such a disk.
