Hey Mark, now that you have an external drive, you can use a program  
such as super duper or carbon copy cloner to back up your mac. The  
cool thing about these programs is, you can then boot off the external  
drive, and use all functions of the mac, even restoring back to your  
internal drive. Time machine is another backup option, you can't boot  
from a time machine backup, but you can restore your system using the  
snow leopard dvd, so it's still fully accessible. As far as I know,  
there is no fully accessible solution that will allow you to fully  
restore a windows system with speech.
