VoiceOver has never taken long pauses while reading messages. It pauses very slightly when it meets a new line character, and that hasn't changed. I don't expect it to change, either, as I'm fairly sure it was introduced to improve the reading experience in documents containing lists, where items are only separated by a new line character.
