Sounds like weirdness. Have you tried the usual things like rebooting and repairing permissions?

Nope, they are just normal drives. I mean, I have plugged them in before for a
long time with no problems.

I guess that eliminates my first hunch. Finder > Preferneces > General then check off "Show these items
on the desktop". I was guessing these might have been turned off and that things actually were mounting, just
not showing on the desktop. Also, in disk utility, for any drive that isn't your current boot drive, the mount
button never really goes inactive, it just changes from "Mount" to "Unmount". Are the volumes
special somehow like being encrypted?

Because it shows up in Disc Utility, but not anywhere else. The Mount button is
not greyed out. When I mount it by pressing that button, it pops up on the
desktop and anywhere else I have it set to show external drives and discs.

How do you know it didn't mount?

I *think* this started after upgrading to the newest Mavericks, but not sure.
Whenever I put in a CD, or a DVD, or whenever I plug in one of my four thumb
drives or the one external hard drive, I have to manually go into Disc Utility
and tell it to mount.

Does anyone know what I need to rest to fix this? I'd like everything to just
automatically mount so I an get to it like it used to.
