I did, a few times. Eventually I went ahead with the hard shutdown. After some 
fiddling with user accounts, everything is working and I'm installing the 
latest updates. That was really odd, but at least it finally worked. Now, let's 
just hope the MBP holds up; my friend lent it to me since it refused to boot 
and always ran slowly. I'm hoping the clean install of a new OS will make 
things better.
