Hi, There are two applications that do this quite nicely. I'm more familiar with the first, and I've been a long time user of it.
1. Audio Book Builder (shareware was $5 US when I got it years ago). This app is accessible on a Mac and allows you to import files from your drive, iTunes, or even CDs. Audio Book Binder (free) This is a more recent application to solve the problem. I believe it was designed to convert mp3 into m4b formats for iOS devices to preserve place during playback. I do believe it links smaller files as well.
