Hi Teresa, Automator can create folders which it watches and then performs certain actions if a file is placed in that folder. Hazel is different in that it will perform the action only if the given conditions are met, and these conditions are quite powerful. Moreover, it is easier to setup as you just select the folder you want Hazel to watch from the Hazel system preference pane, and then add the rules. A bit like Rules in Apple Mail for Mac. You can download and trial it for free if you're interested in how it differs from Automator.
