Hello Mike,

The idea of the bootable USB key is to ensure that whatever the situation, you
can do a clean install of Mavericks without even needing an internet connection.

In your current situation, you really need to do a clean install of Mavericks
and retrieve your data using Time Machine.

For anyone updating to Mavericks who uses the Infovox iVox voices, I would
strongly advise them to uninstall the voices and do a Time Machine back up
before upgrading to Mavericks as these voices cause a lot of trouble after an
upgrade.

It's definitely worth reinstalling the voices afterwards as they really are
excellent.

Another thought. Have you done a Time Machine backup since upgrading? If not,
reinstall Mountain Lion, restore from Time Machine then uninstall Infovox iVox,
do another back up then you can do a clean install of Mavericks and restore all
your information from Time Machine without worrying about the voices.

Cheers,

Anne
