Go to System Preferences in the Apple Menu. When that dialog opens, choose "flash player". You can choose your update options at this point. I had mine set to install automatically. This isn't actually what happens. when it's set to install automatically, there's an update dialog, and this is how I came up with Flash 13. Anyhow, in the flashplayer preferences, there's also a "check now" button. You'll get a message with the update status.
