Hi,

Firewire is also named IEEE 1394 which was a standard used both by Windows and 
MacOS to transfer digital audio and video.  Firewire had a much quicker 
transfer rate than USB, and along with the technology behind its transfer 
style, it was the preferred method for video editing and other digital media 
sorts of applications.  Most MacBook Pros up to the 2012 pre-Retina Display 
models as well as most Desktop units were Firewire capable.  Except for some 
time way back in the 90's, no firewire cables were supplied with your Mac 
purchase, they needed to be purchased separately.
