Thanks, Cheryl. I can open the directory in finder; it just doesn't see the 
files. What's more, if I change the directory for the output file, finder 
doesn't find it. I just tried outputting a book to my Dropbox books folder. I 
opened the directory in finder and didn't find the file. When I opened Dropbox 
on my iPod, it found the file and I opened it in iBooks, as i'd converted it 
from html to epub. So I think it's Mavericks that's having the hang-up, 
specifically finder, as I can open any of my converted books from terminal or 
the iPod.
