I have upgraded to iOS 7.1 .1 on my iPhone 5s. I have managed to clear out all the unread messages, but Messages itself is frozen. My wife confirms that the keyboard and cursor and everything freezes, so this is not just a voiceover problem. The app itself seems to be malfunctioning.
