There had been a lot of complaints because Apple had taken away the
ability to sync the contacts on your phone to your computer without
using iCloud. A number of people didn't like the idea of all that
personal data having to take a detour over the internet to Apple's
servers before it came back to their computer. I can understand some
folks being concerned about privacy leaks and others just found it
simpler to sync via USB directly. In any case, it sounds like they
brought the 'local sync' feature back although I haven't tried it yet.
For me I actually like the iCloud sync of contacts as I have multiple
devices.
