system prefferences, and other apps starting up with the mac?

Hello how can I keep system prefferences, and other stuff eg some of the 
apps I had open last from starting up when I start up my mac?
I told the mac to now reopen last windows and apps at log in but it 
keeps doing so anyways.
I really don't need my system prefferences opening every time I start up 
my mac
