Hi,

Since Mavericks this has been an ongoing issue. Gmail handles imap really 
poorly.
Some fixes that you can try are going to the folders and labels section of 
settings while in the standard web view (you’ll have to use the mouse on the 
icons with vo+command+f5), then turn off imap for the archives folder.
Additionally, deleting most labels worked for me temporarily.
Both of these fixes, I might add are really bad approaches. Neither of them 
worked for me in the longterm; hence why I switched from Gmail to iCloud. There 
is also a thread regarding this instance in the MV archives; it was discussed 
in length a few months ago.
