Hello Matthew, Here's how to remove the preview pane.
If you're in classic view, navigate to the horizontal splitter between the headers and the message. Bring the mouse. Press down on the trackpad with one finger and stroke down the way on the trackpad with another finger. Sometimes it can take several attempts before the preview pane is gone. Interacting with the splitter and dragging it downwards just makes Mail go busy.
