There's no time limit. However, she might have the email disabled in settings. 
Open Settings > Messages and find the section where all her emails and phone 
numbers are. Make sure the email is selected, and there you go. Note that, as I 
understand it, only email addresses that are Apple IDs, or phone numbers that 
are tied to iPhones, can be used for iMessages.
