Thanks, Cheryl. That certainly seems to be the key. I tried that but somehow I must have unchecked a lot of boxes inadvertently (despite being very careful), as after Dropbox applied the changes I lost most of my folders from this Mac. I've now tried to re-check them and am now waiting for those changes to be applied. I hope that takes me back to normal (fingers crossed). Perhaps this has something to do with my previous attempts at setting this up, though each of those times the update button remained dimmed and thus no changes should have been kept.
Anyway, it's something for others to be wary about and seems it's still worth writing to Dropbox and informing them of the issue.
