Right arrow, as you've been doing. This will sometimes stop working, and here's 
what I do:
* find a conversation and hit right arrow, it should make only an error tone.
* Trun VoiceOver off.
* Hit down arrow, then up arrow, to get back to your conversation.
* hit right arrow once or twice. You should not hear an error tone this time.
* Turn VoiceOver back on, and proceed as normal. This only happens once every 
few weeks at most for me.
