Whatever the reasons, we're caught in the crossfire. I'm personally convinced,
having reported bugs to Apple, that some get fixed, and others do not. It may
be a purely clerical issue which do and which don't, and this is part of the
reason I implore people to get brave and test and report on experimental
software, in a constructive manner, wherever possible. Regardless, I don't
believe the religious fervour in support of or against Apple is warranted. To
take a recent example, iBooks was and is broken all the way through Mavericks,
and if you believe that equality is a manifest right of all human beings, I
don't see how you can fail to advocate for a better show than that. Apple is a
business, but equality does not ebb and flow with their business interests and
priorities, whatever the reason; the fact that Apple has invoked godlike powers
to get us the access we now have is completely, totally, utterly irrelevant.
On the other hand, we are equal to all other consumers, which means that we
don't enjoy any more privileges than other consumers; in particular, we can
expect to be frustrated by bugs and poor quality control, to have our wishes go
unanswered for extended periods of time, to have our personal grievances go
unfixed, to find upgrades lacking according to our own priorities, and to have
no more access than is essential to achieve equal opportunities to our sighted
peers. To judge from the timbre of the comments on the list, including mine,
and of whatever merit and in whichever direction they are aimed, it is up in
the air whether or not Apple is meeting its basic obligations to us as a
consumer group. If you asked me, I'd speculate that Apple is struggling for
survival, and we as a group are simply in a much better position to appreciate
the effects, rather than because of any particular neglect of accessibility. I
hope I'm not wrong about that, but I could well be.
