Hi, This is not normal behaviour. A 2010 iMac should handle Yosemite just fine. Have you checked in the Activity Monitor to see if anything is using up resources? It sounds to me like some sort of third party app or resource in conflict with VO. Either try a clean install with migration or try removing any add-ons that may be causing a conflict.
