I presume you are talking about Finder folders.
It is difficult to definitively tell what is going on but here are a
couple of possibility.
To understand the following you need to understand about tagging of
Artist name so I will assume you know this.
The first is that your artist tagging does not match your finder artist
Folder names. This could definitely be the case if you have not opted to
let iTunes organise your music.
So although the artist name is tagged as Various Artists they may be in
folder, perhaps called Var or Compilations etc.
The other possibility is that you have in fact opted to let iTunes
organise your music but the artist names are tagged with the real
musicians rather than the generic term Various Artist. . This would mean
that provided the option is checked to treat an album as a compilation
the actual I tunes tracks whilst treated as a compilation would actually
be split across several Finder folders.
So for example if you had an hypothetical Various Artists album called
Great 60s music and you had this album tagged as a compilation, itunes
whilst showing it as a compilation in its library will if allowed to
organise your music split the contents into several Finder folders
organised under the Artists name. .
So you might have a Beatles version of Great 60sMusic , a Rolling
Stones version of Great 60s music and a Pink Floyd version of Great 60s
music.

I have a fair number of compilations which are by "various artist". When I am
in iTunes, and I get to the various artists section, I see a whole bunch of albums.
If I go into my music folder via the alias which is on my desktop on the Mac,
and I open up the folder for various artists, I get a scroll area. And in that
scroll area there are just a few albums, maybe 20% of what I have. I wonder why
this is, and how I can directly access the files in all those various artist
compilations which are not showing up in this scroll area. Why is this
happening?
