Not sure if you ever got this working the way you wanted—I haven't been
checking the list for a while. If not, try this:
tell application "VoiceOver"
tell commander
perform command "move mouse pointer to voiceover cursor"
delay 1
perform command "click mouse"
end tell -- commander
end tell -- VoiceOver
