Just a follow up to this.. I did try the window chooser and again, nothing happened.
Afraid to just power off the mac air, I let it sit there a little while, but finally did power it off and waited about 30 seconds, turned it on again, and when it came up, I again got the set up assistant, but it went through whatever it had to finish setting up really fast and then everything was normal again. Took the mac air on my trip and loved having a full sized laptop with me in addition to my trusty i phone 5c!
