Hi,

To answer your questions, yes.  If you have it set to Automatic, then the 
following should occur.  Any apps that have updates in the AppStore, will 
automatically update when the update comes available.  This may not necessarily 
be instantaneously, but very soon after.  You will be notified via the 
Notification Centre of any updates that could not be installed automatically 
either due to the need for a restart or if the given app is open/busy.  You 
can, of course, still use the methods mentioned by others on this thread to 
manually check and install updates.

1.  Go under the Apple menu and choose About This Mac then press on Software 
Update.  (This one is causing you grief, so use a different method)
2.  Go under the Apple menu to AppStore then press cmd-5 to focus on the 
Updates tab.  This can also be accomplished by choosing Updates from within the 
Toolbar of the AppStore.  Or, while in the AppStore, press VO-m to access the 
menubar, right to the Store menu then down to Updates.
3.  Go into System Preferences, in the AppSore pane then choose Check Now down 
near the bottom of the window.
