Hi,

First,  make sure that “Show iTunes Purchases in the Cloud” is checked from the 
Store pane of iTunes Preferences.  Next, from the Music table, not a Playlist 
table, locate the song/songs you wish to upgrade.  Press Backspace or Delete on 
each of the songs making sure to read the dialog that appears to ensure that 
the checkbox that asks if you wish them to be deleted from the Cloud is not 
checked.  Once they have all been removed, the Download option should appear 
and you can download the higher quality version if it exists.  If it does not, 
the same version of the song will be dowloaded right back to your Mac.
