Hi Anne, I've had that problem before, but realized that i couldn't put it back on via the trackpad because i iadvertently switched quicknav on. Sometimes while doing various commands, you might end up pressing left/ right arrows and turning on quicknav without hearing voice over. Then if you are typing, and sometimes your palm rests against the trackpad, it turns it on, then off. It also happens with muting voice over with the triple finger double tap.
The one workaround i have is to turn the trackpad off when i don't need it. VO counterclockwise rotation of the fingers.
