I am using an iMac from 2011 and if you have ever listened to any of my
Podcasts you should be able to hear that it is a pretty fast machine.
However back in 2011 I invested in a 256GB solid state drive and 16 GB
of ram. I have never regretted doing this.
If your machine is of an even a more recent spec and not performing then
there may be something else wrong.
The biggest factors in slowing Voiceover down for me are
1. Not using Alex as default voice creates problems.
2. I have learnt not to use activities.
3. The number of external drives I have attached makes a difference. If
these multiply then the time the Mac takes to boot increases a lot,
especially if they are slow big drives.
4. Permissions repair and using clean my Mac also seems to speed up matters.
Generally I would have a look at what is being loaded at start up to see
if what is being loaded and take out anything you do not need.

Hi all,
As some of you may remember, my employer has purchased an iMac for me. I am
sorry to say it, but I've been incredibly disappointed in the iMac. I had
expected it to perform better than my MBA, but the opposite seems to be the
case. It boots very slowly, and voiceover cuts in and out after the boot
process for a couple of minutes. the wireless connectivity also seems weaker
than on my MBA. It also seems more sluggish overall - apps take longer to
open, documents and websites take longer to load. Long and short, I'd never
choose it over my MBA if it weren't my work computer. I'm wondering if anyone
else has observed similar behavior? If so, any strategies for troubleshooting?
I'm thinking of adding more memory, in the hope that that will speed up the
boot time and get rid of VO dragging.
Cheers,
Donna
