Hello Everyone, Earlier today, a friend of mine locked herself out of her Mac running Yosemite. That is to say, she could not remember her MacBook Air User account login password; and, to make matters worse, she declined the setup option of being able to use her Apple ID in order to let her reset it.
Fortunately, I was able to locate an article that describes how to reset an Administrative password from the Recovery Partition. The link to the original article is located at the bottom of this post. Here are the steps I took, via VoiceOver, in order to reset her password and get her up and running: 1. Restart the Mac in Recovery Mode by holding down Command+R while powering on the computer. Wait until you hear the Startup chime before releasing these keys. This will force the Mac to boot into OS X on the Recovery Partition that was created when you installed OS X 10.7 or later. 2. When booting is complete, from the Menu Bar, open Utilities and select Terminal. Don't worry. You won't have to do anything exotic on the Unix command line. 3. In the terminal window type in "resetpassword" (without the quote marks) and hit Return. A new window will open. 4. Select the disk containing the user account. In most cases, this will be Macintosh HD. 5. Select the desired user account name. 6. Enter the new password in the first edit field and then re-enter it in the second edit field located just beneath it. A password hint is optional. 7. Click the Save button. 8. Go back to the Apple Menu at the top and select either Shutdown or Restart. If all went well, when the Mac restarts normally, you'll be able to login to the administrator account with the new password.
