I am slightly confused by what you are describing. For me selecting words is
not a problem as control shift and left or right arrow keys work as normal.
From the first part of your message it sounds like this might also be working
for you?

If I use control plus num pad 4 or 6 I can read a word at a time which works
around the control arrow keys lack of functionality. . This was annoying until
I got used to it, now it seems normal and not really a problem. However I never
use the numpad for selecting text as the existing control shift arrow keys are
working fine anyway.

I am probably not understanding what you are describing.
